Before this I had written two e-books, one aimed at writers and one aimed at the dating niche market. Both of them were doing pretty well. They weren't setting the world alight but I was making money from home writing - which is what I loved most. My passion has always been writing and all of a sudden I was making a living from it. Life was sweet.

However when I stumbled upon the gold rush story I got thinking. What would happen if I became a shovel seller? What would happen if instead of selling the books myself I started to sell licences to them so other people could sell them? You see, I'd watched what UK millionaires like Andrew Reynolds and Tim Lowe had been doing. They were making a fortune selling licences to information products so people could sell them on and keep the profits to themselves. They were shovel sellers. Hmm...

In December 2005 I wrote two ebooks. I worked my backside off at the local library creating quality books. I then wrote a short sales letter and bunged a web site up. My plan was a membership site where people paid me $37 a month for a resellers licence to two ebooks, or $296 for a years membership. However this was different to the usual resell rights offers. I was selling the private label versions of the books. This meant that people who had a licence got the books in raw format so they could add their own name as author and make any changes they want. In essence they were getting an instant business with their name on it.

I placed one small advert in an ezine called "Dollarmines" which directed people to the web site. As it was just before Christmas 2005 I didn't really expect any response but I was an impatient bugger back then and just wanted to get started.

What happened next came as quite a shock....

I first tried this out two years ago

I woke up on new years day with a bloomin' great big hangover. I'd been so busy over Christmas I hadn't checked my emails. I fired up my PC and saw something that I hadn't seen before...

...receipts from paypal from my new "shovel seller" site. My hangover got better pretty quickly I can tell you.

Over the next month it bought in over three thousand pounds. I know I know, it's hardly the "millionaire" promise so many others make but when you think my total cost to get that site up and place the ad was £79 that's a pretty tasty return.

Over the next year I just kept repeating the process. To this day I still have people paying me $37 a month for access to the site. However as you'll find out shortly I've got a bit more clever. I thought the whole point of an internet business was to have enough spare time to do whatever you wanted! At that time I wasn't free at all.

I then read a business book that talked about growing a business using other peoples time and money. Essentially you don't want to be the one working in the business, you want to be one working on the business. So rather than spending time on something you can hire others to do you concentrate on growing and marketing your empire. I soon came to realise that I was spending so much time writing the books for the site I didn't have any time to market it. So whilst I was working writing books the money started to dry up.

Hmmm. I knew I was onto something, but it still wasn't as perfect a business as it could have been....

Last year I "tweaked" the system and made just under twenty thousand pounds...and I still wasn't even doing it right!

In 2007 I changed tact and started selling licences to video and audio based products. With youtube and itunes being two of the most popular sites on the planet I realised online multimedia was the way to go. There are a few rules on this but the fact is that these are ready made products anyone can get hold of and do anything that they please with. They can sell them their selves and make money keeping all the profits (like I do), or if they're clever they can turn them into private label niche products with resell rights and sell them for a small fortune. In other words they can grab an instant business for free or for a small investment, and then "flip" them for bigger instant profits.

I know what you're thinking. If these are instant information products you get for no to low cost why aren't people already grabbing them and selling them? Another thing you might be thinking is "they're probably old crappy products that no one will want to buy or publish". Wrong. Here's what I have done myself recently with some public domain works:

• I got a book that is widely regarded as the greatest success classic of all time, "Think And Grow Rich". It has sold over thirty million copies and has a huge and passionate following. I simply got this book from the public domain, turned it into an audio product without speaking a single word (I'll teach you this trick) and am selling it for £77. Instant product. Instant profits. Instant business.

• I searched around a few "underground" web sites and found thirty books all aimed at the self help niche market. I grabbed them and turned them into video products. I'll be selling access to them all for $247 (around £126). Again no thought needed. And these too are classic books that sold millions when they were first published.
